CHA CHA (Intermediate) with Sarah Riddle: One of the most delicious dances of the Latin dance family - the 'Cha Cha Cha' is as versatile as it is lovely, with swift staccato steps and sweeping turns than span a floor...not to mention the hip movement! Cha Cha dance is accompanied by the music of the same name that offers fast or slow paces, inspiring sexy or sassy moves, and a one of a kind rhythm that could go by no other name than 'Cha Cha Cha'! This intermediate level class will give students a beefy Cha Cha combo that they can take home and break into peces if they wish, or keep it as is. Chalk full of little stylish details and unexpected twists, this combo will be as fun to do as it is to watch! Cha Cha 1 or higher prerequisite |

BALBOA : (all levels) with Geoff Young and Melissa Roane Currently extremely popular among Portland swing dancers, this very
fast 8-count dance originated in Southern California at the Balboa Park
Club an enormous wood-frame building, home of the Naval Officer's Club
in San Diego during W.W.II. The perfect solution to those really fast
songs, Balboa features intricate footwork, breakaways and great styling
techniques. There will be an emphasis on lead and follow in closed dance
position. |
||
8:30 - 9:30 ARGENTINE TANGO Level 3 (INTERMEDIATE) with Megan & Carrie Level 3 focuses on taking lead: follow techniques to a higher level,
strengthening the connection between partners, expanding and polishing
the step repertoire, and deepening responsiveness to the music itself.
Each monthly topic (such as "socially acceptable boleos",
"making milonga your friend", "safe and sane sacadas",
refining close embrace, "turns of all types", and "cadenas")
allows students to refine their fundamental technique, which ultimately
allows for more improvisatory possibilities. Emphasis is always placed
on clear, attuned lead and follow skills, as well as usability.
MILONGA is in 2/4 or 4/4 time and is characteristically faster than tango. And it has a relentless, almost marching quality and a very regular beat. The emotional flavor is happy, upbeat, fun. It derives from street dancing and is more earthy and angular than Tango and Vals. VALS is in 3/4 time, slower than Viennese waltz. Very lilting and flowing,
curvilinear. Romantic. |

CHA CHA (Intermediate) with Sarah Riddle Latin music is complex and fascinating music, with many rhythms to
move to and be moved by. While Salsa focuses on the down-beat of the
music (note; Salsa tends to be a blanket term for many music styles
that are very similar), Mambo and Cha Cha Cha focus on a specific rhythm
played by the Conga drum, called the ‘Tumbao’ rhythm, separating
Cha Cha and Mambo from Salsa entirely. This class begins with that beautiful
rhythm, and the basic Mambo step. From there we incorporate a triple
rhythm, called the Cha Cha Cha, and begin exploring some of the turn
patterns and body movements that make these dances so ‘spicy’!
Beginning cha cha will focus on fundamental and core moves used in the
dance. Intermediate cha cha will work on new Prerequisite: ChaCha Intro or equivalent dance experience

It is designed for those persons who, at a minimum, are accomplished
at the fundamentals taught in both WCS 1 and WCS 2. We will start each |
||
| WEST
COAST SWING 2 with Chris Jones: This class is intended for people
who are comfortable with the basic patterns of West Coast Swing. The foundation
of any dance is grounded in the fundamental basics. For this reason we
will generally start with basic patterns and then spice them up to create
endless variations. This is a lead and follow dance and emphasis will
be placed on proper execution of each of these roles. We will also learn
syncopations for both the leader and the follower. Pre-requisite WCS 1 or instructor approval. |
||
| WEST
COAST SWING 1 with Chris Jones: This class starts out where you
would expect it to, with the basics! Working on the fundamentals of this
dance you will focus strongly on the concepts of lead and follow while
building a vocabulary of basic West Coast Swing moves. Whereas this class
is certainly intended for the beginner, more experienced WCS dancers will
most certainly benefit from the time spent returning to the fundamentals. |

| SALSA: Salsa with Sarah Riddle and George Caceres Welcome to the exciting world of Salsa! Contrary to what many believe about Salsa dancing, it is a very forgiving, intuitive, and easy to learn social dance. Salsa is not only fun, but culturally relevant given recent awareness and appreciation of Latino Cultural. Born from Afro-Caribbean rhythms and Jazz, Salsa music is a web of complex, but repetitive, rhythms that are energizing and uplifting. Viscount Salsa classes are student centered - meaning the material and pace of the class is determined by the students in the class, not the intended choreography of the instructor. Our Salsa classes are fun, non-intimidating, and highly addictive! We recommend students of any level to listen to Salsa daily while taking classes. Here are some artist names to look for: Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Jose ‘El Canario’ Alberto, Sonora Carruseles. Salsa 1 Introduction This class will cover the basic steps of Salsa dancing, and fundamental concepts on fame, body movement, and partnering. We will discuss Salsa specific dance technique and the core framework of leading and following, as well as tips on how to cover up mistakes, non-intimidating stylistic flares to spice up any move, and dance floor etiquette. Students will also learn 3 or more ‘moves’ to use on the dance floor and be introduced to the Cross Body Lead, Salsa’s most common type of Intermediate move. No partner or prior experience necessary.
Level 2 Salsa will bring students from stationary basic moves to the world of Cross Body Lead variations and introduce the Open Break. In the 4 week series students will work on the basic CBL as its own move and as a transitional move as well as learn new moves including the Under Arm Pass, UAP w/ double turn, Casino Rueda’s Enchufle Doble, CBL w/ inside turn, CBL w/ shoulder turn, and CBL w/ hip turn. Strong lead and follow technique is emphasized in this class. Our instructors believe in teaching a versatile style of Salsa that is Club and Ballroom appropriate – that is, moves and techniques that make sense no matter who you are dancing with or what style of salsa they do. No partner required. Prerequisite: Salsa 1 or equivalent.
This class is where it starts to get exciting and challenging. Because
there is so much material to learn at this level, we recommend students
repeat this class 3 times before moving up to Int. 1 Salsa. With new
material every month, students will learn a range of moves that build
on the Cross Body Leads and Open Break variation they have already learned,
but adding new twists, breaking old rules, and creating more stylistic
moves. While still lead-able on the social floor, Salsa 3 moves will
require students know their basic CBL and Open Break footwork so that
new turns and variations can be introduced. Level 3 will also lend more
attention to shine footwork, and Follows styling that can be incorporated
into turns and basics. No partner required. Students must know CBL w/inside
turn and be very comfortable with basics. Prerequisite: Salsa 2 or equivalent.

In Lindy 1, student will learn about partnering ‘connection’, Lindy rhythm and the universal Lindy basic step, the “Swing-out”, plus other moves to incorporate into your dance.
